While felicitating the award winners, Academic Head of USA UnivQuest – the process facilitators of the Awards, Mr Ashish Khare said – “the intention of the Award is to encourage students to redefine success. If success is linked to only academic achievement, then holistic development of the student will not be possible. The Awards, we hope will encourage students to explore their talents and create their own definition of success.” Explaining how students from all financial backgrounds were encouraged to apply for the Awards, Mr. Khare further said that, “all students shortlisted for the National Awards were eligible to claim 2-way expenses by Rail / Air for themselves and one accompanying adult.”

The Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker at the Awards was Professor Debashis Chatterjee. Professor Chatterjee taught leadership at Harvard University and at the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM), Calcutta, Lucknow, and Kozhikode for over two decades. He has been awarded the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship twice for Pre-Doctoral and Post-Doctoral work at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He has trained more than fifteen thousand managers globally in Fortune 100 Corporations and over fifteen thousand school principals and teachers. His published work include seventeen books such as Timeless Leadership and Invincible Arjuna.

The students who have been selected for the coveted awards represent a diverse kaleidoscope of backgrounds, aspirations and achievements. For a very talented Muskaan – a budding poet and an active basketball player, we have an equally strong achiever in Subhash Chandra Bose, who is inspired by Netaji Subhash Bose and wishes to serve his country. Among the many award winners, there are patent holders, tech-innovators, authors, world record holders, entrepreneurs, Olympiad winners, and other super achoevers.

About The Student of the Year Awards

The Global SOTY Foundation has instituted the Student of the Year Awards to encourage school students studying in classes 8 to 12 to pursue their passions, rather than being blindly drawn into the rat race for admission at the top institutes in India.

There are 2 broad categories of the Award
(a) Student of the Year – National
The best 3 students in each class (Class 8 to 12) across India have been shortlisted to receive the National Award. The Winners in each class will receive a Gold Plaque. Similarly, the first and second runners-up will receive a Silver and a Bronze Plaque respectively. All these students will also receive a Certificate of Excellence.

(b) Student of the Year – City
The best 3 students in each class (Class 8 to 12) in each City have been shortlisted to receive the City Award. However, if the minimum benchmarks were not met by students from a particular city, then no Awards are to be conferred in that City. Winners in each class will receive a Gold Medal. Similarly, the first and second runners-up will receive a Silver and a Bronze Medal respectively. All these students will also receive a Certificate of Excellence.

Process of Evaluation for the Awards

Once the student registers for the Awards, they are expected to complete their profile on the Universal Student Application Portal. The portal is the repository of all achievements of the student. On the portal the student will be required to submit the following documents: grades in class, certificates and letters indicating their achievements, recommendation letters, etc. In addition, the student is required to answer the long and short essay questions.

Students are also recommended to appear for the Potential Discovery Test, which would help them in boosting their profile.

Students who are shortlisted are required to appear for a Personal Interview. At the personal interview students are required to show the originals of the documents in order to enable a correct evaluation of the genuineness of the claims made by the student in their application.
