“Unless we act, we risk waking up five years from now to find that facial recognition services have spread in a way that exacerbates societal issues,” cautioned Smith at a blog article. “Like many technologies with several applications, facial recognition values careful attention to make sure its use is aligned with our principles and values also avoids abuse and damaging effects,” Kent Walker, Senior Vice President of Global Affairs at Google, said in a blog post on Friday.

Toeing Microsoft’s line which has asked governments across the world to regulate this particular technology, Google said recognition merits careful consideration. “We keep working with many organizations to identify and address these challenges, and unlike a few other companies, Google Cloud has chosen to not offer general-purpose facial recognition APIs before working through important engineering and coverage questions,” educated Walker.

Microsoft is just one of several companies in developing facial recognition technology playing a major role. “The time for action has arrived,” he stated, adding that the industry needs to also exercise restraint while using this technology. Smith explained, would begin embracing principles to control the problems surrounding recognition technology from the first quarter of 2019.
