New Delhi, 3 February 2016: British Council India and PwC India jointly launch School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) India, inaugurated by Hon. Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge), Prime Minister’s Office in presence of Mr. Rob Lynes, Director British Council India, Mr. Deepak Kapoor, Chairman, PwC India, Mr. Jaivir Singh, Vice Chairman PwC India Foundation and Mr. Alastair Wilson, CEO, SSE Central.
Founded in 1997 by Michael Young, SSE supports social entrepreneurs to establish, scale and sustain, social enterprises and social impact projects across the UK, Australia and Canada.
With PwC India as founding partner, SSE is now foraying into India. PwC India will support the development of SSE in India and develop the first fellowship programme offered by the new organisation.

Rob Lynes, Director British Council in his welcome address said, “The British Council is delighted to launch the School for Social Entrepreneurs jointly with PwC in India. The school will provide budding social entrepreneurs with an opportunity to enhance their skills and nurture their innovative ideas into potential social enterprises. I am confident that the programme, which is the first of its kind in India, will empower social entrepreneurs and will make a positive change to society.”
On this occasion Mr. Deepak Kapoor, Chairman PwC India said “Social entrepreneurs are playing a very crucial role in our society today by fostering much needed innovation at the grass roots level. This initiative is in line with PwC’s purpose of building trust and solving important problems. We are proud to be partnering SSE in further propelling the spirit of social entrepreneurship in the country through this learning and mentoring programme.
As a Founding Partner, PwC will contribute its domain expertise to fuel SSE’s model and passion to address fundamental challenges through the brigade of social entrepreneurs solving critical social problems plaguing India’s development trajectory”.
PwC has a long lasting strategic partnership with SSE in the UK
Jaivir Singh, Chair, SSE India and Vice Chair, PwC India Foundation said “SSE believes that strategic mentoring of one social entrepreneur will help create several more in the society.This is important if we are to create an eco-system of entrepreneurs who will help share the responsibility of nation building along with the Government and private sector. We have also found that social entrepreneurs continue to innovate and go on to create multiple organisations, so by investing in the individual we are helping to create ‘serial social entrepreneurs’.
”
Also, one of the SSE fellows from UK, Annie Francis spoke at the function. Annie set up her social enterprise Neighborhood Midwives with an aim to provide every woman with a choice of a positive experience of childbirth supported by a midwife she knows and trusts. While sharing her experience she said “I have loved the sense of support and generosity of spirit from both the SSE staff and fellow students. Working in this sphere can be very frustrating and actually quite lonely at times but coming in for my blocks of time at SSE was always a bright spot and I never failed to come away re-inspired and re-invigorated.”
Alastair Wilson, CEO of SSE UK said, “We are excited to be part of India’s journey on Social Entrepreneurship which has recently been fueled by many government initiatives and policies. I hope SSE India will forge many meaningful partnerships like the PwC and British Council. We are very much looking forward to welcoming our first cohort of social entrepreneurs in India and supporting them on their journey to create social impact “
