Indian athlete Lavanya Jain has brought laurels to India by winning a gold medal at the recently- concluded Emirates Cup for Rhythmic Gymnastics in Dubai. The 15-year old gymnast won gold in floor exercise (category C, seniors) at the tournament. Currently, Lavanya who is a student of Class XI in Suncity School, Gurgaon, is among the top 10 rhythmic gymnasts in the country, and is aiming to qualify for the Asian Games to be held in Indonesia next year. She is also eyeing 2020 Olympics.
Emirates Cup for Rhythmic Gymnastics was her first international competition and she wasn’t expecting to win.
“It was an invitational competition, so we had to apply for participating. But I had only a month to prepare and wasn’t expecting much. I just went to participate and for the exposure. I never thought I will end up on the podium, let alone win the gold,” she said.
Elated on meeting her role model Russia’s Margarita Mamum, Olympic gold-medallist and winner of seven World Championship gold medals, she says: “Dubai was amazing because for the first time, I saw an international floor and got to perform in front of my idol Margarita Mamum. We even got to train with her for two days. Winning the gold was special but training with my idol was the greatest feeling ever.”
“Lavanya has made not only the school but the entire nation proud. Her achievement speaks volumes of her hard work and dedication. We look forward to her winning more international tournaments and carving a niche as a gymnast of international stature,” said Rupa Chakravarty, Principal, Suncity School.
Emirates Cup for Rhythmic Gymnastics witnessed participation of over 370 female competitors representing 25 countries from all over the world. Four local clubs also participated in the Championship, besides elite group of Arab champions from UAE, Egypt, Kuwait and Qatar.
