31 March 2016, Chennai: The British Council announces the launch of its two new state-of-the-art classrooms and Young learner zone in Chennai. The British Council’s English Language Centre provides access to high quality English language education, offering communicative language courses for students and professionals that are tailored to the needs of learners. The classrooms open out into the extensive British Council library, stocked with the latest collection of English language learning and teaching resources.

Mei-kwei Barker, Director, British Council South India says: “The British Council’s ambition is to improve access to high quality English language education thus helping India enhance its competitiveness in the global economy. Since we launched the English Language Centre in 2009 we have seen a growing demand from our Chennai audience. The new classrooms will help us accommodate a more diverse group of learners and we hope the extended timings will help customers find flexible slots which suit them. Our revamped Young learners’ zone provides enhanced access to physical resources and an expanded online collection for our young readers.”

The UK is a world leader in English language teaching, and for over 75 years the British Council has been delivering high quality English courses to learners around the world. The British Council teaches over 20,000 students annually at the English Language Centres in Chennai, Kolkata and New Delhi. The centre not only helps improve the overall communication but offers practical experience and also helps impart skills to improve English language abilities for all age groups.


English courses for young learners
Our young learner courses make use of innovative and exciting materials to encourage students to speak as much English as possible. With the focus of project work and learning through doing, they develop their general knowledge and life skills while improving their English.

We run a 3-week Summer School course for young learners between the ages of 8 and 15 years. Summer school starts from 2 May 2016.

The theme for summer 2016 is ‘Shakespeare’. Children will be introduced to a range of Shakespeare’s plays and will have the opportunity to experiment with drama and theatre.

Our courses are designed for adults looking to improve their proficiency and confidence in English. They focus on all areas of English with a clear application of language to relevant, real life contexts

Listed below are British Council’s wide range of free online resources to help adults, teenagers and children learn English.

Through the British Council English language course you are, of course, gaining more than English language classes. There is discounted membership for the library with its wide range of resources, both physical and digital. There are exciting arts events, film screenings and discussions/debates, storytelling sessions for children; which brings us to the Young learner zone.

As we are launching the Young learner’s zone in our library, we have also expanded our online collections for children. We have brand new additions such as Comicplus and Atomic Training.

Comic plus is an online graphic novel portal with stories from all around the world. They are packed with the power and convenience of the digital form and have collections ranging from James bond, Iron man, Sindbad and many exciting characters. The comics can be downloaded or bookmarked and read later. Atomic learning is an online training portal that opens up unlimited access to thousands of short videos covering more than 500 of today’s most popular software applications on both PCs and Macs. The list is very exhaustive ranging from career skills, internet usage, Microsoft, adobe, apple, Google and other frequently used training. We have also introduced downloadable fiction audiobooks.
