11 June, 2019, Bengaluru: “This institution has nurtured and shaped my career. My IIMB years taught me humility, among many other things,” said Chief Guest Amit Sharma, Global COO, IBM GBS, and an IIMB alumnus of the 1992-94 batch, while welcoming students to the two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) and the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) of IIM Bangalore, on June 10 (Monday), 2019. He went on to say that he has learnt some very important virtues that leaders should possess, such as, the right attitude; investing time in identifying strengths of team members and leveraging those; facing tough situations head on; taking time to plan and strategize; spending at least a third of one’s time on people issues and networking, and spending time with family, friends, community and balancing it all. “Remember, leadership does not come from title, but from results and trust”.

I have summarized some traits that tomorrow’s leaders need to imbibe: invest for the long run; skills should be aligned to succeed; deal with tough situations; operate with integrity and do not take the short cut; keep performance up consistently; empower people around you and work in teams, and be open to criticism”.

Listing the elements that the new batch should be focussing on for the next two years, he said: “Chase your dreams with passion, drive, energy and integrity. Remember, the miracle of learning within and outside the classroom will stretch your capabilities. Spend every moment on campus learning and networking. Learn and interact with older and next batches also, such networks will prove invaluable in the future. Grow as individuals, do not take all this as a race. The only race should be with yourself. I would also like to share that there is no dream job – it is a myth. Focus on skills and abilities to learn. The ability to relearn is also vital as the future of business is very dynamic. The situation will favour those who are open to lifelong learning”.

There will be a lot of pressure on you and expectations from you. You may also often wonder if you can overcome these. Trust me, you will. Engage in exercise and extra-curricular activities as these will be your anchor. So, buckle your seat belt. This will be a lifelong experience, so enjoy every moment,” he added.

IIM Bangalore welcomed 441 students to the 2019-21 batch of the two-year full-time MBA programme – Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP), and 25 students to the doctoral programme – Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), with an inauguration ceremony, on June 10.

Earlier in the evening, Professor Padmini Srinivasan, Chair, Post Graduate Programme in Management, in her welcome address, said that the new students have made it at this great institution due to their hard work and perseverance and they are sure to carry the name of IIMB forward through their achievements.

Be sound in mind and body’

Professor G Sabarinathan, Chair, Admissions & Financial Aid, in his address, shared the batch profile. The new PGP batch has 18% freshers, and the average work experience is 24 months; 18% are non-engineers and 37% are female students. “This diverse cohort will lead to a very interesting community,” he observed. “Remember three things: Joining IIMB carries with it the humongous responsibility of keeping the flag flying high. As a community we are proud of this campus and everything it entails. The faculty and alumni of the institute have made a mark through their accomplishments. Other than academic and managerial competence, try to imbibe social and ethical values. Second, as students you will often experience self-doubt, which is natural. Remember, a well-rounded manager is a more effective manager. Problems do not come in expected categories. So, take interest in all subjects and build diverse skills. Thirdly, try to strike a balance between curricular, extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, and stay fit. Above all, thank with all your heart all those who helped you get this far”.

Faculty strength

Sharing that IIMB has one of the largest faculty bodies in the country, Professor Gopal Naik, Dean, Faculty, said: “The faculty here are very accomplished, they publish in top journals across the world, and receive awards from highly respected professional bodies. Make the best use of our faculty resources,” he advised the new batch.

Professor Abhoy K Ojha, Dean, Academic Programmes, wishing the new students, asked them to soak in the learning and the atmosphere.

From the Director

Professor G. Raghuram, Director, IIMB, also welcomed the incoming batch. “Many people strive for a place where you are standing today. So, be ready for the journey ahead consisting of hard work – IIMB is indeed the place to be.” He shared the institute’s recent landmark rankings, vision and mission of IIMB, and advised the students to get out of their comfort zone. “The reinforcement of common sense will be made more challenging by your efforts. The programme and course design, the pedagogy, assignments, etc. have been made with great detail and care. You have to focus, prioritize, stretch yourself, work in teams and imbibe multiple perspectives, and understand your full potential. Try and realize that team efforts are the best way to outstanding results. Learn from, and contribute to, one another. Be conscious of the environment, minimize waste (especially food waste) – these basic values will stand you in good stead. Among all you students, I extend a special welcome to the 21, who have made it here against all odds. Strive for excellence, values and academics. You will remember this experience and the friends you make years from now”.

He ended his address by quoting IIMB’s motto: तेजस्वि नावधीतमस्तु (tejasvi navadhitamastu), which translates as ‘let our study be enlightening’. “Continue to learn. The learning is not only for you as students, but also for the faculty who are the facilitators of knowledge, who will also learn from the process”.

The day’s events also included the Director meeting with parents of the students of the new batch, interaction of students with the Chief Guest, Director, Deans, Chairs, faculty and officers, as well as an address by the Students’ Affairs Council (SAC) President Piyush Rath on Life at IIM Bangalore. Presentation of the Director’s Merit List, Director’s Honours List and Scholarship Announcements to the PGP 2018-20 batch were also made.

The inauguration ceremony ended with a cultural programme by Manasi Prasad & Group.
