The Opening Ceremony of this high-profile Convention was graced by the presence of its Chief Guest H.E. Barlen Vyapoory, the Vice-President of Mauritius. Among other noted guests were Mahiela Herath (Chief Minister, Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka) and Arjoon Sudhoo (Director, Mauritius Research Council and Chairman, Air Mauritius).

As the students had put all their round –the-clock efforts in preparation for this gala – comprising Public Speaking Contest, Debate Competition, Poster and Slogan Making Competition, Cultural Programme and Kavi Samelan, they bagged all the top laurels in different competitions – leaving their counterparts from other schools of India, Mauritius, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

Not only the Suncitizens bagged the prestigious Overall Best School Trophy, rather scripted their success in each competition. While the duo of Ranvijay and Manikaran Khurana impressed all with their debating skills and the latter also won the Best Speaker Prize for the same for his convincing argument for the motion, the first time entrants also caught the show in the Junior Case Study group, with their outstanding presentation on their statistical research and problem solving on the topic ‘Low Educator-Educatee Equation’ and got the First position. Unfazed with the grilling question round by the judges, they bowled one and all of them by their wit. They also elaborated their school’s novel learning methodology of peer teaching and flipped teaching.

In the Senior Case Study Group with a topic, ‘Attitude determines Altitude’, the Suncitizens didn’t even provide any space for the judges, to cross-question and bagged the Second Place. In the Kavi Sammelan, Arnauv Gilhotra and Riya Gupta made an indelible impression with their perfect poetry recitation and recited a beautiful poem on ‘Sab Ka Saath, Sab Ka Vikaas’ and bagged Second place. While the enthralling dance performance of the Team Suncity mesmerized the capacity crowd, its participants bagged the fourth position out of altogether 30 participating schools.

The convention also witnessed a High-level Seminar for Educators, where the Suncity School Principal Rupa Chakravarty, presented her research paper on ‘Are schools teaching the right skills and competencies for employability’ as a resource person. The session was attended by Advisors and Director Generals of World Council for Total Quality and Excellence in Education and Principals of International Schools.

It may be noted here that the students were appreciated by all the participating national and international delegates, for their outstanding diction and confident poise at every event. The remark of Mr. Abdul Wahid Mir, Principal of Modernage Public School, Pakistan was laconic to describe the performance of Suncitizens, who overwhelming remarked: “I do not know how much learning Suncity students are taking from here, but the other participants definitely have a lot of learning to do from Suncity School.”

The students had the unique privilege of visiting the Mauritian Parliament and were addressed by the Speaker of the National Assembly of Mauritius, Ms. Maya Hanoomanjee, a dynamic lady, who shared an overview of the functioning of the Parliament. They also enjoyed the rare experience of visiting the State House at the invite of the Vice-President of Mauritius. The heartfelt hospitality of the Mauritian Society for Quality Control Circles was also praiseworthy.

Mr. Madhukar Narrain and his team of student and teacher volunteers from educational institutions in Mauritius took special care of all the delegates.
