Being Selfish is Healthy, Being Selfish

Dan Lok, a business influencer and Founder of Closer.com says that his biggest learning of life is ‘you can’t save the world if you can’t save yourself ‘. By this statement the influencer didn’t actually connoted that, the superhero Spiderman needed to be safe from his super enemies like Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus or Venom (to name a few) in order to save the world instead, he suggested your inner happiness and constant satisfaction with regard to your life, relationships, and business, etc. is the pill to keep you safe from feeling negative or insecure. This is how you be safe and save the world by literally giving away a reasonable share of your happiness to the people you care for.

Sounds simple, ‘you be safe you keep the world safe’ but this saving ourselves involves the unacceptable trait of being selfish. Why does saving ourselves involves the unacceptable trait of being selfish and Why is being selfish so unacceptable?

Why Is Being Selfish so Unacceptable:

Selfishness is being too careless to care for anyone around, it’s being too involved in oneself and overlooking the other people. A selfish person often gets to hear that ‘stop being selfish’ and for the obvious reasons, things didn’t go according to the speaker’s wishes. No wonder, the speaker couldn’t accept the attitude of the listener and the way things went.

Selfishness is something which is being talked anywhere and everywhere- in the schools, colleges, families, work, offices, etc and the way it is framed sounds alike to what has been written above. What they are actually missing to figure out is Selfishness is Healthy as long as the person is keeping the other people in its radar after putting himself first. Healthy selfishness is stopping to put everyone else first, calling it generous and keeping ourselves second. In today’s world, keeping others first is something which might cost to some extent in terms of good opportunities and happiness and giving us the chance to regret it later. Humans are intense enough to find multiple ways to regret if they did not regret something they missed; they will regret something that others missed. We need to understand that caring enough to not regret anything is the job of the one who is prone to fall into a situation where he or she might regret it.

It is okay to be selfish and not thinking about anybody else in the first place, not caring about what others would say because what’s good for you is good for others as well, if you won’t take it others will. There is no point repelling good opportunities just because you got carried away by emotions or by the thought ‘is it selfish’, as opportunities are a source of happiness. Singing off from a toxic relationship is not selfish no matter how much criticism you receive because it was you taking farther from your peace of mind. It is healthy and acceptable to be selfish as long as you have peace of mind and energy to make peace for others because a disturbed mind can never reflect peace.
