International Day for Eradication of Poverty is an international festival celebrated annually on October 17 worldwide. The first commemoration of the event took place in Paris, France, in 1987 when 100,000 people gathered at the Human Rights and Liberties Plaza in Trrocadéro to pay tribute to the victims of impoverishment, hunger, violence and terror at the revealing of a monument to Joseph Wresinski, founding father of the International Movement ATD Fourth World. Due to some technical faults, this can happen. In such a case the amount deducted will be transferred to the bank account in the next 7-10 working days. Normally the bank takes this much time to credit the amount back into your account.

At times, there may be a slight delay in your payment reflecting on your EasyShiksha dashboard. History
This year marks the 28th anniversary of the General Assembly, in its decision of 47/96 of 22 December 1992, of 17 October as World Poverty Alleviation Day. This year also marks the 32nd anniversary of the Call of Action by Father Joseph Wresinski – who promoted the celebration of October 17 as World Poverty Alleviation Day – and is recognized by the United Nations of the day as World End Day. The October 17 monument, Father Joseph Wesinski unveiled at Trocadero Plaza in 1987, is recognized as the symbol of humanity that reinforces his name
“Wherever men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, human rights are violated. To come together to ensure that these rights be respected is our solemn duty.”
To date there are a total of 53 statues of the Monument worldwide including countries such as Belgium, Burkina Faso, Canada, Germany, the Philippines, Portugal Reunion Island, Switzerland, the UK and the USA. Statues of the monument can also be found at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
The October 17 International Committee was established in 2008 to promote World Poverty Alleviation Day with its innovative spirit. The composition of the committee varies with members including people with extreme poverty living experience and human rights defenders involved in the fight against poverty. Every year, the International Committee enters into a consultation process with the Poverty Alleviation Forum to select the theme for the annual celebration of October 17 by the UN by incorporating ideas from people with knowledge of poverty.
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty promotes dialogue and understanding between people living in poverty and their communities, and society as a whole. “It stands for the opportunity to acknowledge the efforts and struggles of the poor, the opportunity for them to express their concerns and the moment to realize that the poor are at the forefront of the fight against poverty.”
Philosophy
Early in his career as an activist, Wresinski noted that governments often overlook the conditions of those living in poverty, leading to feelings of rejection, shame, and disgrace. As a result, one of the main objectives of the day is to recognize the struggles of the poor and to make their voices heard in governments and citizens. The participation of the poor is an important aspect of day-to-day observance.
The Theme for 2020 was “Acting together to achieve social and environmental justice for all”. This Year’s theme has not been decided yet.
