National, November XX, 2024: Drawing from 33 years of military service, ex-Brigadier Rajiv Williams YSM has launched “Valor and Values: Aligning Military Experiences to CSR,” published by Pentagon Press. The book was launched on 14th November 2024 and examines how military social duties have evolved beyond traditional ‘aid to civil authorities’, creating new pathways for collaboration between Army Social Responsibility (ASR) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Through real-world examples and personal experiences in the army across various conflict zones and peace-time locations, the book masterfully juxtaposes the principles of ASR with the evolving landscape of CSR. It illustrates how military values and operational approaches can enhance corporate social initiatives. Williams shares insights from the 1971 India-Pakistan war and his role in ‘Operation Sadbhavana in Ladakh’, one of the world’s coldest inhabited regions.

“As a young officer during the 1971 India-Pakistan war, I realized that the military’s role extends beyond just protecting the sovereignty of the country. We had a responsibility to care for and protect the civilians left behind by the retreating Pakistani forces,” said Ex-Brigadier Rajiv Williams. “This realization, along with my experiences of Operation Sadbhavana in the Ladakh region, inspired me to explore the deeper connections between military service and corporate social responsibility.”

After serving as Group Head CSR at Jindal Stainless Limited for 17 years and now as a Member of the Advisory Board at NIIT Foundation, Williams brings practical insights from both worlds. His role involves implementing sustainable business practices that mirror the disciplined, systematic approach he learned during his military career.

Industry leaders have endorsed the book’s practical approach. Mr. Narayana Murthy, Founder of Infosys Limited, commends its fresh perspective on social responsibility, while Lt. Gen. Satish Dua, Former Chief of Integrated Defense Staff, praises its unique insights into military-corporate interactions.

“Valor and Values” speaks to military personnel, corporate leaders, and policymakers interested in strengthening connections between military expertise and corporate social initiatives. Readers can find the book at Pentagon Press and major online bookstores.
