T20I Bowling Spells

Cricket, the gentleman’s sport’ has ever been known as a match dominated by the batsmen, but there have been many outstanding bowlers who have made life difficult for the batsman at the crease. No matter how many runs a team scores in a Test match, they will need to pick up 20 wickets to win the game. The situation in ODI’s and T20s isn’t much different with all the bowlers playing a crucial role in limiting the opposition by picking up wickets at critical intervals.

Ahead of the Twenty20 International series between India and Australia, here’s a look at the top five most successful bowling spells that have been bowled in the shortest arrangement on Australian land in matches played between India and Australia:

Nathan Bracken: 3/11 in Melbourne (2008)

Four months after India was crowned the World Twenty20 winners in 2007, they crashed to a humiliating nine-wicket defeat against Australia. India was bundled out for 74 runs in 17.3 overs from the only T20I at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on February 1, 2008, with left-arm seamer Nathan Bracken ending 3/11 within his 2.3 overs. The fact that Bracken bowled one maiden over in his spell also highlighted India’s pathetic batting display. Irfan Pathan (26) was the only Indian batsman to get to double figures. Australia raced to success in 11.2 overs.

Jasprit Bumrah: 3/23 in Adelaide (2016)

Jasprit Bumrah made a dream start to his T20I career. Australia has been given a fine start by their openers Aaron Finch and David Warner in pursuit of a 189-run goal in the Adelaide Oval on January 26, 2016, until Bumrah got rid of Warner. The ‘yorker specialist’ then returned to discount James Faulkner and Cameron Boyce as the Aussies fell short by 37 runs. Bumrah’s three-wicket burst came off 3.3 overs and he couldn’t have asked for a better introduction.

David Hussey: 2/4 in Sydney (2012)

Matthew Wade (72) and David Hussey (42) helped Australia pile up 171/4 in the 1st T20I in Sydney on February 1, 2012. The Indian run chase missed the momentum it needed since Hussey bowled two overs, surrendered only four runs and took two wickets, among which was Rohit Sharma being bowled for a golden duck. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni finished unbeaten on 48, but his knock just diminished the margin of this defeat — 31 runs, as Australia took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Praveen Kumar: 2/21 in Melbourne (2012)

Praveen Kumar’s two-wicket burst began the slide for Australia from the 2nd T20I at Melbourne on February 3, 2012, also along with three run-outs, was instrumental in bowling the hosts out for 131 runs in 19.4 overs. Opting to bat first, Australia got off to a bad start as swashbuckling opener David Warner (8) skied a Praveen delivery high up in the atmosphere only to be captured by Gautam Gambhir at heavy mid-wicket. Praveen got his second wicket two balls later when Shaun Marsh pushed forwards to some delivery but edged the ball to first slip, where Virender Sehwag fumbled the catch but while falling on the ground, reached out to tap the ball further upwards for captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni to take the catch. India chased down the 132-run target with 8 wickets in hand along with two balls to spare for their first victory of the tour.
