Gurgaon, December 2024: Great Lakes Institute of Management, Gurgaon, one of the leading management institutes in India, launched the SCORE Index (Sustainability Content Occurrence and Relevance Evaluation), a one-of-its-kind index to track and evaluate the extent and relevance of sustainability content being generated and disseminated in mainstream press. The index has been developed by the institute’s Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development in collaboration with India Data Hub.
The newly-launched SCORE index seeks to address the gap in the availability of a comprehensive framework to assess and measure the quality, frequency, and relevance of sustainability-related content in mainstream media. By providing a structured tool for evaluating sustainability reporting, the SCORE index will support journalists, policymakers, students, and researchers in generating, disseminating, and analyzing sustainability-related content.

The SCORE Index, is a unique tool that measures the extent to which business media disseminates sustainability-related content, thereby raising social and environmental awareness among citizens. This index will be available live on a weekly basis on the Great Lakes website and is expected to benefit policymakers, managers, journalists, students, and researchers. The launch was one of the key highlights of the institute’s 3rd International Conference – the Winter Conference on Sustainable Business (WCSB-2024)themed “Roadmap to Sustainability : Challenges and Opportunities for Business Models and Practices” .
The conference was formally inaugurated by Shri Rajesh Agrawal, IAS, Additional Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt of India. Speaking at the launch of the index, he said, “India’s overall SDG score has seen significant progress, rising from 57 in 2018 to 71 in 2023-24, reflecting our commitment to achieving the SDG goals.” He further added, “However, businesses need to shift focus from solely addressing supply-related issues for green products to also generating demand. Collaborative efforts are essential to advancing sustainable consumption and production.” The Keynote address was delivered by Dr Philipp A. Rauschnabel, Professor of Digital Marketing and Media Innovation at the University of Munich, Germany. He talked about how XR (Augmented reality / Virtual reality) could be a game changer in driving the sustainability mandate globally.
Dr Sanghamitra Bhattacharya, Director of Great Lakes Institute of Management, Gurgaon’s Sustainability Centre, described the index as “an SDG tracker, similar to stock market trackers.” She explained, “The team referred to UN SDG documents to identify around 1,200 sustainability-related terms, which were evaluated for their importance and benefit. These terms formed the basis of a master document that now guides the index’s assessment process.”
Highlighting the need for greater awareness, Dr. Bappaaditya Mukhopadhyay, Professor of Finance & Analytics at Great Lakes, Gurgaon, remarked, “If we truly want to make progress on sustainability, the first step is to talk about it.”
He further explained that the development of the SCORE Index has been a collaborative effort, and they are eager to see its impact on policy and practice. “This index will provide critical insights into how sustainability is communicated and perceived in the business world,” he added.
The Winter Conference on Sustainable Business 2024 also featured a pre-conference doctoral workshop facilitated by leading academics from around the world. The event saw participation from nearly 100 delegates, including academicians, industry practitioners, and government representatives, and was sponsored by HDFC Bank, with International Business School, Toronto, and India Data Hub, Mumbai, as knowledge partners.
