According to a survey, 70% of employers across the globe consider emotional intelligence to be one of the most important factors when hiring decisions. In this context, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in education is becoming increasingly significant, particularly in fostering these essential skills among young learners. However, only 25% of the schools have incorporated social and emotional learning (SEL) into the curriculum. Empathy, self-regulation, teamwork, and communication are examples of social and emotional learning (SEL) skills essential for personal growth and future success.

Here Mr. Pankaj Kumar, Managing Director, Shard Centre for Innovation shares insights on how AI can help develop Social and Emotional Skills in Young Learners

Personalized Learning Experiences:

One of the key benefits of AI in education is the ability to personalize the learning experience. AI-driven tools can recognize a learner’s emotion through facial expression, voice modulation, or some interaction with objects. This information helps instructors design experiences that make the students feel comfortable and catered for all the time. For example, when a student shows signs of irritation during a lesson, the system can modify the lesson objectives and offer different explanations. This ability to adapt encourages an environment where young children can build the ability to be flexible and bounce back, which are very important aspects of emotional intelligence.

Enhanced Empathy through Virtual Interactions:

The technology has advanced to the level where it can create environments to enhance learner’s understanding and appreciation of each other. Students can use Virtual Reality (VR) or Artificial Intelligence (AI) simulations to put themselves in the position of others, learn from them, and even adopt their ideas and lifestyles. For example, a VR scenario may pose the topic of how it might feel for a child from another class or caste, allowing young learners to understand and reflect on the experience. Such activities develop empathy, teaching children that even if people have different emotions, they should be accepted and valued, which is critical for communication and teamwork.

Social Skills Practice in Safe Environments:

AI chatbots and virtual companions can create opportunities for social interaction among young learners. These AI entities may be presented with different types of scenarios, which learners can use in practicing conversations, conflict resolution, and responses to emotions without the fear of consequences in reality. For example, a student could practice communicating feelings or resolving arguments with an AI partner to build confidence and refine their technique. This activity is very good for shy or nervous students since it allows them to progressively develop their social skills.

Emotional Literacy Development:

AI tools can also aid in the development of emotional literacy by assisting students in recognizing and expressing their feelings. Apps equipped with AI can assist learners in practicing exercises that promote emotional recognition and expression, such as nudging an AI application that encourages a learner to reflect on their day, describing what they felt about particular experiences, thereby building the ability of a child to understand or put his words into emotions. This reflective practice is integral to self-regulation, an important part of social and emotional skills.

Data-Driven Insights for Educators:

AI may help teachers gain insight into the social and emotional dynamics of their class by analyzing students’ interaction levels and emotional responses. It may then identify the patterns surrounding these phenomena and point out areas of concern to educators to implement targeted strategies that meet their needs regarding social and emotional learning. For instance, if data reveals that a class has trouble collaborating, then a teacher might engage students in group activities in a manner that would specifically help in improving collaboration. Data-driven approaches empower educators as they support the development of an emotionally nurturing learning environment tailored to their own students’ needs.

Now, AI plays an important role in children’s education as it helps them develop their socialization and emotional functions. It offers unique personal learning experience opportunities, encourages empathy through virtual interactions, increases emotional literacy, and promotes inclusivity-instruction, making it a great ally in developing the social and emotional competencies needed for success in life. As educators and technologists continue to explore the potential abilities of AI, the emphasis must stay on using these technologies to develop well-rounded individuals capable of thriving in a complicated, interconnected world. Adopting this technology could transform not only academic accomplishment but also the essential skills that create understanding and collaboration among future generations.
