The keynote address was given by Dr. Venkat Padmanabhan, Deputy Managing Director, Microsoft Research India. He talked about ‘HAMS: Harnessing AutoMobiles for Safety’, and said “Road safety is a major public issue all over the world. In the Harnessing AutoMobiles for Safety (HAMS) project at Microsoft Research India, we employ a dashboard-mounted smartphone, and the array of sensors it includes, as a virtual harness, with a view to monitoring drivers and their driving to improve safety. We focus primarily on the camera sensors of the smartphone, both the front camera, which faces the driver, and the back camera, which looks out to the front of the vehicle. We address the challenges arising from our choice of low-cost generic sensors instead of more expensive specialized sensors, the need for efficient processing on a smartphone, and demands of robust operation in uncontrolled environments. HAMS has been piloted as part of a driver training program, with promising results, and has been deployed for smartphone-based automation of driver license testing.”

Throwing light on the day-long event, Prof. Ranjan Bose, Director, IIIT-Delhi, said, “Research Innovation and Incubation Showcase is a confluence of thought leaders, researchers and developers, who are passionate about bringing new advances in areas related to the five key themes: Digital Health, Human Centered Design, Information Security, Internet of Things and Sustainability. This event is a platform where some of the most creative minds will present their cutting-edge research work, the way forward, and the multi-faceted opportunities for collaboration.”

At the ‘Digital Health’ session, key areas of discussion included Digital Platforms for Preventive Health, Big-data, Omics, Innovations in Artificial Intelligence and the roadmap to Healthcare Deployment. The session on ‘Human-Centered Design’ (HCD) revolved around the talks on ‘Digital health and emergent users’, ‘Social Communication – Humanizing technology for Health Behavior Change’, and ‘Responsible Research and Innovation in AI’. The theme ‘Information Security’ saw discussions on ‘Blockchain Technology and Implications’, ‘Absolute security is a myth’, ‘IoT: Security Challenges’, and ‘Privacy and Identity Management’.

Sessions on ‘Internet of Things’ captivated the listeners with topics such as ‘Efficient Association-Free WiFi for Disconnected IoT Nodes’, ‘Imitation Learning in Robotic Systems and Other Research Activities at ISCON lab at IITK’, ‘Life Augmented with IoT and Smart Technologies’, ‘Recent Advances in IoT Security’, and ‘IoT – Architecture and industry solutions’. The speakers for ‘Sustainability’ theme shared their insights on ‘Looking past the illusion of efficiency, in pursuit of sufficiency’, ‘Population Stabilisation and Gender: Ensuring Women’s Rights and Access to Family Planning’, and ‘Accounting for climate variability in societal outcomes’.
