IIIT-Delhi Workshop On Making Capital the “Smartest City”

The Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi (IIIT-D) organized a workshop on “Smarter and Digital Delhi” on Sat, Feb 13, 2016 at Okhla, Phase III, New Delhi, to discuss challenges and opportunities for transforming Delhi into digitally smart city. Prof. Pankaj Jalote, Director of IIIT-Delhi chaired the programme in the august presence ofShri. Manish Sisodia, Deputy CM of Delhi, who also inaugurated the event.Prof. Valerie Issarny from INRIA- France, and Mr. Ashish Khetan – Vice Chairman of DDC were the keynote speakers at the event. There were several other presentations by persons from both academia and industry.

The prime purpose of the one-day workshop was to explore solutions of problems such astraffic management, public transport, parking, pollution, waste management, health, safety, public grievances, sports facilities, solar energy, administration and governance, housing, corruption, employment, trade / commerce, education,infrastructure and others.

Deputy CM, Mr. Manish Sisodia while addressing the audience said, “Smarter & digital India is a good idea however we need good people to implement it. We need dreamers to actually achieve this vision. Once the dreamers do their work, leaders & investors will follow automatically. Technology, buildings & computers do not make city smarter, we need smart people & smart societies to make a digital society. We look forward to actual implementation of the ideas and projects discussed today.”


Prof. Pankaj Jalote, Director of IIIT-Delhi, said,“It was an interactive workshop to discuss the major issues that Delhi is facing today. We feel that addressing these issues and ensuring public participation in providing implementable solutions to make Delhi – the best place to live. We want Delhi to be a smart, advanced, digital, pollution free and peaceful city. Recommendations and guidance of experts from academia and industry will definitely help in this regard.”

The workshop also enabledthe Delhi Dialogue Commission to have discussions with the researchers and technologists on the contemporary issues. Moreover, public suggestionswere also presented before the Government of Delhi.Ithadalready been assured that practically feasible ideas will be taken up for the implementation. Moreover, people with the smartest solutionswere awarded with gifts and certificates.

During his speech, Mr. Ashish Khetan, Vice Chairman, DDC, said, “There have been numerous initiatives by government in last 1 year to make Delhi more connected and viable. We focus on making people smarter and we understand that information empowers the citizens. Therefore there should be more transparency & greater accountability in the system and that needs to be coupled with technology. We need to harness technology to its full potential and to achieve it we have set 3 goals for ourselves. First goal is to bring entire government online, second is to open data centers of government and thirdly is to become first ever paperless administration.”
