Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is a day of celebration that began (beginning in 2003) on January 9 by the Indian Ocean Republic of India. society in the development of India. This day commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to Mumbai on 9 January 1915.

Established in 2000, with the support of the Indian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the Confederation of Indian Industries and the North Mpumalanga Regional Development Department. A commemorative event is held on 7-9 January every year in the Indian city: a venue for the Indian Diaspora issues is presented and the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards are presented.

In 2006, the concept of Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) was introduced during a meeting of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Hyderabad on January 9.

In 2014, the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was held in New Delhi and attended by 1,500 delegates from 51 countries. President Pranab Mukherjee presented the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards.

In 2013, 11 Pravasi Bharatiya Divas were held in Kochi from 7 to 9 January, when the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) organized a partner for the conference. The President of Mauritius, Rajkeswur Purryag, was the guest of honor at the official opening ceremony. Canadian Prime Minister Jason Kenney was the first non-Indian heritage speaker to speak at the event.

The 12th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was held between 7-9 January 2014 in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. This year’s theme included the Dispersal of Foreign Residents: Connectivity for All Generations.

The 13th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was held between 7-9 January 2015 in Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar, Gujarat. This year’s theme was “Apna Bharat, Apna Gaurav”.

      

The 14th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, which was supposed to be between 7-9 January 2016 in New Delhi, was canceled under MEA’s decision to make the event two years long.

The 15th Pravas Bharatiya Divas was held on 7-9 January 2017 in Bengaluru, Karnataka. This year’s theme was “Re-engaging with Indian citizens”.

The 16th Prussian Bharatiya Divas was held between 6-7 January 2018 at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.

The 17th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas 2019  was held between 21-23 January 2019 in Varanasi, India. The Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Jugnauth, was a major guest.        

History

The decision to celebrate Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was taken in accordance with the recommendations of the High Level Committee (HLC) regarding the Indian Diaspora established by the Indian government under the leadership of L. M. Singhvi. The then Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, received the Committee’s report at a public event at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on January 8, 2002, and announced the “Pravasi Bharatiya Divas” (PBD) on 9 January 2002. The date was chosen to mark Mahatma’s return. Gandhi from South Africa to India in 1915.

The 8th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas took place on 7–9 January 2010 and was broadcast live on the website of the Department of Foreign Affairs, and posted live on social media blogging and tweeting live in Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, a sponsored online forum by Kotak.
