About Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel, popularly known as Sardar, was an official of the Indian government. He has served as India’s first Deputy Prime Minister. He was India’s attorney general, and a major leader of the Indian National Congress who played a key role in the country’s liberation struggle and led its unification into a united, independent nation. He was one of the conservative members of the Indian National Congress. In India and elsewhere, he was commonly referred to as Sardar, meaning “king” in Hindi, Urdu, and Persian. He served as Minister of Home Affairs during the political coup in India and the 1947 Indo-Pakistani War.
Patel was born in the Nadiad Kheda region and grew up in a rural province of Gujarat province. He was a successful lawyer. He later organized farmers from Kheda, Borsad, and Bardoli in Gujarat for disobeying the law of violence against the British, becoming one of the most influential leaders in Gujarat. He was elected as the 49th President of the Indian National Congress, organizing the party in the 1934 and 1937 elections while promoting the Quit India Movement.
As the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of India, Patel organized efforts to help refugees fleeing the Punjab and Delhi from Pakistan and worked to restore peace. He led the work of building a united India, successfully uniting the newly independent nation of the British colonial states that formed the Dominion of India. In addition to those states that were part of the British Empire, about 565 states that ruled were exempted from British rule under the Indian Independence Act of 1947. Patel urged almost every province to accept India. His commitment to national unity in the newly independent country was complete and unwavering, earning him the title of “Iron Man of India”. He is also remembered as the “saint of Indian civil servants” for establishing a modern Indian service system. It is also called the “Unifier of India“. Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue, was presented to him on 31 October 2018 at about 182 meters.
