Discussing the scholarship program, Maya Shahani, Chairperson, SAGE Foundation and Thadomal Shahani Centre for Management, said, “At SAGE Foundation, our core focus has been on empowering Indian youth who come from under-resourced families, by giving them opportunities to upskill themselves so that they can secure white-collar jobs that provide them with sustainable livelihoods. As a woman, I am also empathetic towards the unique nature of challenges that young Indian women face in their lives, in terms of continuing their education or balancing a professional life with familial duties. The pandemic has made the situation worse, especially for women who hail from low-income backgrounds. Consequently, we have established the Kishore Shahani Scholarship because I believe it is especially important to support these young women through this difficult time and help them become independent.

In my own life, I received tremendous support from my husband, Kishore Shahani, when I wanted to continue my career as an educator after marriage and make a positive impact on young lives. Even though I encountered many challenges as a woman, his staunch support helped me overcome all of them. Through this scholarship, I also wish to honour him for his advocacy of women empowerment at a time when the concept was rare in Indian society.”
