February, New Delhi: Recently, NIV Art Centre organized a residency program which was supported by KCCI by organizing Painting workshop in 2 Partner Schools- Birla Vidya Niketan, Pushp Vihar and Shiksha School, Gurugram. The workshop was given by 5 Korean Artists, ‘Kim Du-eun’, ‘Yoo Jae-sik’, Lee In-seung’, Choi So-Young & Lee Jin-a. Total 57 students participated in the workshop.

During the workshop special training was imparted on the difference between Korean and Western Paintbrushes. Use of Hanji Paper was done, a Korean traditional handmade paper which is made from the inner bark of paper mulberry. The students used black ink and created beautiful pieces of painting. Learning the traditional Korean art -Sumukhwa was an exciting experience for students as they explored creativity through ink and wash painting style. Students were given Hanji paper to practice and brush up their painting skills. The final art work was done on Korean Fans.
Artist Mr. Lee In-seung made portrait of few students which was made in the exact likeness of the students. He said “We hope to have many such creative workshops for students which not only enables the students to develop their creativity and self-esteem, but also brings one culturally closer and builds up friendship between the two countries.”

Artist Kim Du-eun said “It was a great pleasure and happiness to introduce Korean painting as well as interest in Korean culture to the students. Students’ concentration and passionate participation was impressive. I could see their enthusiastic attitude to explore the world of Korean painting while practising the skills of using brushes and black ink on the paper before trying it on a fan.
Art acted as great medium in connecting the artists and trainers in spite of communication language barrier. It was a meaningful experience for all to connect and build deeper bonds of friendship between India and Korea.
