The early years of a child (0 to 6) are the most crucial period of growth as all learning foundations are laid during these years. Furthermore, early childhood education and care have a vital role in the cognitive development of children. By providing them with high-quality education, educators and parents can give their children the best head start in life. However, these benefits are not limited to the children in metropolitical cities but also to the kids growing up in tier 2 cities in India.

India’s educational system is undergoing a seismic change, with Tier 2 cities taking centre stage as they are becoming hubs for transformative learning. With the constant development and reconstruction of primary schools in these cities, the educational demographics are changing for the betterment of children, signifying the importance of early childhood education. To recognise this and its lifelong impact on children, the government implemented the National Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) policy in 2013. In this context, let us understand the benefits of early childhood education in these cities.

Objectives and Benefits of Pre-Primary Education

Children under the age group of 1 to 6 years experience growth and expansion in school academics. The social, cognitive, expressive, and interactive abilities of children are developed at this stage. This period presents a critical opportunity for the government, stakeholders, and parents to make a positive change in children’s lives, allowing them to achieve economic and social goals. Children from weak economic backgrounds and communities stand to gain the most from early childhood education. Enabling them to start school with everyone on equal footing can overall increase their educational achievement and social equity. The expansion of pre-primary education promotes children’s participation in quality learning environments.

The Significance of ECCE Programs in Children’s Holistic Development

Concurring to a report by Save the Children, 1.83 million children died in 2008. To address this issue, the government started programs in Tier 2 cities along with other underdeveloped regions to provide educational and health benefits to children. By setting up ECCE centres in these areas, the government is driving the participation of the female workforce and the education of underprivileged children. The ECCE centres, also known as ‘Anganwadi’ provide substantial support to children. As per a report by the Ministry of Women & Child Development, in 2011, more than 1 billion women and children participated in programs developed by ECCE centres, promoting universal elementary education.

Making Education Accessible to All

The preschool education terrain has weathered the challenges and is now gearing up for a vibrant future ahead. India now has several education hubs beyond the big cities. Notably, numerous small metropolises such as Kota, Dehradun, Bhubaneswar, and Visakhapatnam have always prioritised providing high-quality education for their citizens. The entrance of new technologies and the internet has fundamentally changed the nature of education in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. It has augmented the adoption of global standard education in these cities. In the early days, any new advancement in the sector remained confined to big cities. Today, the information available in larger cities is also readily accessible in smaller towns.

A child’s educational growth is mostly dependent on early childhood education, which also provides the foundation for lifetime learning and development. In addition, the demand for high-quality early childhood education in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities is growing along with the notable increase in parents entering the workforce. Given the direction pre-primary education is headed, we must acknowledge its significance in order to develop a resilient, progressive future. With the advancement of technology and government initiatives, the future of Indian early childhood education is looking more promising than ever.
