New Delhi May 2020: To counter the disastrous repercussions of the COVID-19 induced lockdown, Wishes & Blessings, a Delhi-based NGO has taken the charge of caring for the poor and the underprivileged people of the society to ensure that no one has to sleep on an empty stomach during these unprecedented times.
The lockdown has especially difficult for the daily wage workers who have nothing in terms of savings to survive such a long-term lockdown. Many had to resort to walk hundreds of kilometres to their homes to avoid starvation. In spite of the individual and collective efforts by philanthropists in the country, the problem still persists, and the reason for it is the sheer number of migrant daily wage workers in our country. At this juncture, it is essential for us to come together and support these people who have been supporting our economy for such a long time.
As of 23rd May, Wishes & Blessings has served 13,43,960 meals to homeless and daily wagers, distributed 39,770 dry ration kits and 11,000+ hygiene kits to over 9000 underprivileged families across 7 states in India, namely – Assam, Delhi, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.
In the first three weeks of the lockdown, Wishes & Blessings distributed 500 packets of cooked food each week to families residing in Tughlaqabad Basti as part of their efforts to ensure that no one has to suffer the pangs of hunger.
Important Announcement – EasyShiksha has now started Online Internship Program “Ab India Sikhega Ghar Se” during this lockdown.
Unfortunately, on the morning of 26th May, a huge fire was reported in the same basti, which has burnt down hundreds of jhuggis, leaving the residents homeless with no belongings to call their own. Although no casualties have been reported as of now, needless to say, this situation has been very cruel to these residents.
Addressing the matter, Dr Geetanjali Chopra, founder and spokesperson, Wishes & Blessings, said, “To help the people who have lost their homes and their belongings because of the fire, we are putting together immediate relief packs that will provide necessary assistance to the victims during these tumultuous times. These are tough times, and they have been toughest for the underprivileged people. Those of us who can do something to make things better for these people have to step to the occasion. Even if we take care of one person besides our family, we’d collectively be able to help millions. Whoever saves one life saves the world entire.”
