Theme

Since 1981, different themes have been adopted each year. FAO issues awards each year to commemorate and advertise the commemoration.

The theme for World Food Day 2014 was Family Farming: “Feeding the land, caring for the land“; in 2015 was “Social Protection and Agriculture: Ending the Rural Poverty Cycle“; 2016 is climate change: “The climate is changing. Food and agriculture must also“, echoing the 2008, 2002 and 1989 headlines. The theme for 2020 was “Grow, nurture, nurture. Together. Our actions are our future.

Most of the themes focus on agriculture because only agricultural investment – and education and health support – will change this. The bulk of that investment will have to come from the private sector, where public investment plays a key role, especially given its ability to facilitate and revitalize private investment.

Despite the importance of agriculture as a boost to the economies of many developing countries, this important sector is often starving. In particular, foreign aid to agriculture has shown a significant decline in the last 20 years.
