Bamboo the material of future In today’s blog, I am going to talk about the material of future i.e Bamboo. Bamboo grows within five years to a fiber stronger than any wood whatsoever. So why is it not used more often as a building material? CRG Architects used this question as a guideline for their design of the Bamboo Skyscraper, a 200 meter high skyscraper in Singapore.
Increasing demand for wood and wood-based products is associated several environmental concerns. This has shifted the focus of researchers to explore alternative materials with similar properties. Bamboo in this context has emerged as the most promising alternative to wood.Though mankind is using bamboo in various applications yet recently it has emerged as a modern engineering material i.e we call Bamboo the material of future. The present paper explores the applications of bamboo in various applications. Traditional uses of bamboo including pulp, paper industry, building and handicraft are reported. The potential of utilization of bamboo lies in its usage in industrial applications. Recent research elucidates the high adsorption and antibacterial properties of bamboo-charcoal. Attempts are underway to utilize bamboo charcoal based composites for pharmaceutical and textile industry. Unique insulation properties of bamboo make the bamboo building eco-friendly. Green buildings and rooftops are also in the stages of development.
The idea behind the skyscraper is to create a focal point in the urban area, with a strong focus on sustainability and social interaction. Bamboo is a highly suitable construction material in this respect. In addition to being highly renewable, bamboo is able to withstand high torque – higher even than most steel, which also makes it earthquake proof. But for such high risk building Bamboo is not enough. Therefore the joints of the structure are made of steel to which the bamboo is tied. The crossing of bamboos and the two main structural cylinders ensure the stability of the skyscraper.
