Boxing Federation As coronavirus pandemic continues to cause havoc around the world, different countries are announcing lockdowns to help control the spread of the virus. Consequently, various industries are adopting new operation measures to keep them run despite the pandemic. Many companies are banking on virtual meetings with video conferencing being the new norm.

The Boxing Federation of India has not been left behind as it announced that it would train the Olympic-bound boxers online. The federation announced this after the training was halted due to the coronavirus-forced national lockdown. The nine fighters will receive online training from their coaches to ensure that they maintain their mental well-being, training regimen as well as meet their nutrition needs.

Tokyo Games Qualifiers

The Tokyo games were postponed until 2021 owing to the global pandemic that has caused thousands of deaths. The qualifiers include Manish Kaushik (63kg), MC Simranjit Kaur (60kg), Mary Kom 51kg, Pooja Rani (75kg), Vikash Krishan (69kg), Ashish Kumar (75kg), Lovlina Borgohani (69kg), Amit Panghal (52kg), and Satish Kumar (+91kg)

BFI President Ajay Singh held a conference call with the nine boxers on Sunday, where he took stock of their preparation following the national lockdown that will last until April 14. The Boxing Federation online training will start on Monday to help the boxers maintain their physical fitness and weight as directed by their coaches.

Like in many sports, you may need to postpone placing your cricket odds as coronavirus brings cricket to a halt. However, the fact that boxing is holding online training gives you hope that you’ll start betting shortly.

Singh didn’t fail to note that these are challenging times, and he urged the players to take care of themselves. He was quick to assure the boxers that they’ll get over the crisis and get back to the ring, but in the meantime, they have to remain motivated.

Commenting on the same issue, the BFI Executive Director, R K Sacheti, noted that the boxers’ diet and mental health are the most crucial during this lockdown period. According to Sacheti, the idea behind online training is to ensure that the fighters maintain their nutritional needs since being at home at all times can make them go off the diet. He added that the men training would be conducted by Santiago Neva, the director of India Boxing’s High Performance. Santiago has been in self-isolation for 14 days in Delhi.

Sacheti added that Santiago is the only available boxing coach in Patiala at the moment. He will have access to the boxing hall, where he will train the boxers on the required technicalities that will help them stay healthy and connected. Rafaelle Bergamasco, the women’s high-performance director, will conduct women’s online training.

When Sacheti noted that they were hoping things would improve and end the lockdown, he pointed out that they couldn’t wait until that happens to start training from scratch. This is given that no one knows how long the pandemic will last and that when it all ends, they will have a smooth transition.

The team won nine unmatched Olympic slots at the Asian qualifiers held in Jordan earlier this month. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has seen all sporting activities put at halt throughout the country and other parts of the globe. That’s why boxing management came up with online training.

Bottom Line

The coronavirus pandemic has claimed the lives of 27 people in the country and infected over 1000. As we hope that things will change for the better, it’s important that you maintain the set guideline to minimize infections. Take this time as a great opportunity to connect with your family!
