Google appears to have quietly added support for hashtags to make it easier for users to find areas that match their needs. According to a new report, Google has verified that the new feature was added to the program over a week back on Android. As of this moment, it has reportedly been declared to Google Maps’ Neighborhood Guides program associates. Google Maps seemingly lets users add as many as five hashtags at the conclusion of the testimonials. Also, they can add hashtags to older reviews. As of this moment, there’s no information on when the hashtag support will arrive on Google Maps for iOS or the internet.

Google Maps now supports hashtags in testimonials to make it easier for users to search for #datenight spots or #familyfriendly companies or #wheelchairaccessible areas, and more. As mentioned, the platform indicates users add up to five hashtags in each review. Google has reportedly confirmed the service for hashtags has rolled out worldwide on Android devices. Also, Google Maps Local Guides app members can add the hashtags to their old reviews.

This is really only helpful if users add quite specific hashtags – #loveus or #togetheragain or myriad other corny phrases will be of no practical use, however that has not stopped anyone before. You may try searching by hashtag instantly, although there are few, if any, entries for a few of the basic terms I tried in the Bay Area, like #vegetarian or #dogfriendly. The libraries of content within these tags will no doubt develop more useful over time, however. Google has yet to validate when this feature will make its way into the internet.

Adding social components like hashtags, after, and direct messaging to Maps makes a lot of sense for Google – it drives user engagement in a way that is easily monetized. As for the users, well, we get a more easy-to-navigate program (in return for some of our information, but that is another story).

Google Maps Local Guides can retroactively add hashtags to their old reviews, helping surface them for prospective users. Hashtags can be utilized to emphasize accessibility features at restaurants, scenery or selfie quality at tourist hotspots, particular items sold by shops, and much more. The service greatly enhances discovery and may pave the way for future expansions.
