Emotional abuse is difficult to name or even talk about and seldom taken seriously because it cannot be seen like bruises or broken bones. Any relationship can be emotionally abusive like parent-child, siblings, friendship and partner to partner. To explain and identify the nature of emotional abuse in a close relationship and ways to deal with them, Deen Dayal Upadhayay College, Dwarka joined hands with zyego, a company working in the areas of emotional wellness, organized a workshop on ‘Emotional abuse in relationships’.

With the huge participation of students from Deen Dayal Upadhayaya College, psychologists and counselors from zyego interacted with the students to give them good understanding of the concept and its applicability in real life. The interactive workshop was for about 3 hours and consisted of a brief video presentation, followed by several rounds of group discussions, case studies and role plays. The workshop aimed at providing real life insight into the topic and key takeaways that students could apply in their respective lives and relationships.

In the words of Dr. Anubha Mukherjee Sen, Convener – Mentoring & Counseling Committee, Deen Dayal Upadhayaya College “We understand the importance of emotional wellness especially in today’s times. It is time for universities collectively to educate and create awareness on the stigma attached to it. It is our earnest endeavor to work with team of zyego and help the students to identify and deal carefully with emotional situations.”

Ms. Barkha studying English at Deen Dayal Upadhayaya College said, “I was a part of the workshop organized by the college and loved the idea of such workshops which was an eye-opener for all the students. I liked even more because of the interactive sessions. The team gave us few case studies which was full of activity based rather than monotonous lectures.”

According to Arindam Sen, Founder – zyego, “Emotional abuse happens little by little overtime and this makes the self-confidence, self-worth, self-concept, ideas and perceptions of the person wear away. The most important thing is that emotional abuse can constantly damage a person’s mental health affecting social development and leaving psychological scars forever.

He further added, we are creating awareness amongst the students which will help them to be more aware of someone struggling through a situation and to teach them how to identify the signs and take help from the doctors.

The college has already constituted a mentoring and counseling committee which will organize regular workshops with students and faculty members to create awareness about issues which impact their day to day emotional health and wellness and ultimately their productivity as well.
