Applicants who submitted to the BIX Vocal Contest showcased a range of vocal styles from Indian classical styles and beatboxers, to singer-songwriters, loopers, and choral singers from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Dubai and Spain. Singers submitted videos of original songs or covers and uploaded them to facebook using the hashtag #BIXVocalBootcamp.

We received a variety of submissions in different musical styles and languages. I was particularly happy to get a glimpse into all of the soulful original music that is being created by these artists,” said Ms Annette Philip, Artistic Director for BIX, “Each entry was unique and it was extremely difficult for us to choose the 15 finalists. It finally came down to innovation, artistic identity, vocal skill, and authenticity. This contest is testament to all that vocalists in South Asia have to offer.”

Winners of the full scholarships include Aditi Malhotra, Swati Bhatt, and Tyesha Kohli of New Delhi; Abhirami Ajai of Kerala; and Shreya Bhattacharya of Mumbai.

With the popularity of the 5-day intensive at capacity, a new one-day workshop has been added. The BIX Vocal Forum will take place August 11 in New Delhi. Singers, vocal ensembles, and choral groups are encouraged to apply. The full-day workshop will explore a cappella and choral concepts, vocal health, and a panel will discuss careers in the music industry. The deadline to register is August 1, 2018, by 5:00 p.m. EST. Choral groups looking to be considered in the choral forum need to send their materials by July 21, 2018, by 5:00 p.m. EST. Up to four choirs will be able to perform for the other attendees and receive direct feedback by award winning vocal ensemble Women of the World.

Women of the World is a high-caliber ensemble made up of Berklee alumni,” says Mr Clint Valladares, Managing Director for BIX, “These women have toured extensively all over the world and will be bringing their passion for music education and performance to Indian musicians. It’s an opportunity that students looking into music as a career should not miss.”

About Women of the World

Formed in 2008, Women of the World has evolved into a sisterhood, as much as it is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning vocal quartet. Representing Japan, Italy, India and USA (by way of Haiti), the four vocalists, Ayumi Ueda, Giorgia Renosto, Annette Philip and Debo Ray perform in 32 of the world’s languages, and counting. The ensemble believes that learning about myriad cultures in the world (through song) is one of the most powerful ways to gain more understanding about each other. From that understanding, may come acceptance and respect and from that respect may someday come peace. Despite the differences in cultural tenets, when ones studies a folk song, more often than not, the core story is the same, no matter where you grew up. All over the world, people experience love, joy, heartache, birth, death, pain, sorrow, fear, doubt, uncertainty, hunger, excitement, passion, disappointment, failure, victory, surprise, awe, and wonder. It is these common stories that Women of the World seeks to share.

Having toured extensively in North America, Europe and Asia, Women of the World’s latest album, “LIVE” was deemed eligible for Grammy nomination, and they were named 2017 International Acappella Champions and 2014 USA National Acappella Champions. All 5 members are graduates of Berklee College of Music and now teach in the Boston campus and/or serve as touring clinicians for the college in workshops conducted around the world.

Women of the World has a strong commitment to helping the next generation of vocalists find their voice, find fulfilling choral opportunities, and redefine the perception of global acappella music.
