Serguei Netessine, Vice Dean for Global Initiatives and the Dhirubhai Ambani Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Wharton School, said, “Building on the success of the GYLA entrepreneurship program, we are excited to introduce a new finance program for high school students. They will enjoy rigorous academics in personal and corporate finance, as well as activities and exploration outside the classroom that open their eyes to life in the U.S. and on an Ivy League campus. This addition to our GYLA portfolio is a great opportunity for tomorrow’s leaders to learn finance at one of the best business schools in the world, while building a powerful global network of friends and classmates. The GYLA is truly a productive and engaging experience for students, and we appreciate the expertise of our collaborator, BrainGain Academy, in bringing us some of the best students from around the world.”

Harjiv Singh, Founder of BrainGain Magazine, said, “We are happy to collaborate with Knowledge@Wharton on the new Global Young Leaders Academy Finance program. A firm grasp of finance is a valuable skill, and the sooner young students learn it, the better. The program on finance and investments is niche, and it will give students an edge in life. We look forward to seeing the program grow.”

The GYLA Finance program (https://whartonfinance.braingainmag.com/) deepens students’ knowledge in different aspects of finance and investment. With the guidance of Wharton faculty and Ph.D. students, participants learn basic concepts like the time value of money and compound interest, as well as explore corporate finance, ethics and investment decision-making. Students trade on Wharton’s Online Trading & Investment Simulator — using real-world market data without risking real money — and develop and deliver a team-based investment project. In addition to rigorous course work, GYLA students collaborate closely in smaller teams, experience campus life, develop relationships with classmates from around the world, and discover Philadelphia and other local highlights. Students enjoy field trips to well-known destinations, such as King of Prussia, the biggest mall in the U.S., and the amusement park, Six Flags Great Adventure.

The two-week program costs U.S. $6,000, which covers tuition, activities, housing, most meals, ground transportation, and medical insurance while at the program. However, it does not include airfare, international travel insurance, or visa costs. There is no application fee for the program. During the two weeks, students experience typical university life, including bonding with Penn undergraduate students who serve as residential advisors and teaching assistants for group projects and activities. Students also receive a certificate of participation upon successful completion of the program.
