International Day for Biological Diversity (or InternationalBiodiversity Day) is an international day approved by the United Nations for the promotion of biodiversity. It is currently being held on May 22.
International Biodiversity Day falls within the scope of the UN Post-2015 Development Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goals. In this major step of international cooperation, the theme of biodiversity affects stakeholders in sustainable agriculture; desertification, land degradation and drought; water and sanitation; health and sustainable development; power; science, technology and innovation, information sharing and capacity building; urbanization and adaptability; continuous transportation; climate change and disaster risk reduction; seas and seas; forests; vulnerable groups including indigenous peoples; and food security. The critical contribution of biodiversity to sustainable development was recognized in the Rio + 20 results document, “The World We Want: The Future of All“.

From its inception by the Second Committee of the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 to 2000, it was held on December 29 to celebrate the date on which the Convention on Biological Diversity took effect. On December 20, 2000, the date was changed to commemorate the ratification of the Convention on May 22, 1992, at the Rio Earth Summit, and in part to avoid many other holidays that took place in late December,
Activities
In line with the celebration of World Biodiversity Day, in May 2011 the Indonesian Forest Minister opened the 120-meter-long (390 ft) Ciwalen Canopy Trail and 60 meters (200 ft) wide at an altitude of 30 to 100 meters -40 (98-) 131 ft) above ground in Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park, West Java, to accommodate five to ten people on a single trip.
The 2014 theme for Island Biodiversity was chosen because the islands provide a rich source of plant, animal, fish and forest products. Many native fruits and leafy greens are rich in micronutrients. According to the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, two-thirds of the deaths could be caused by non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This may result from a change in diet linked to the use of processed imported products, while local plant species are abandoned or reduced to local food. As a result, representatives of the islands who met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in May 2014 stressed the need for serious research and policy measures to increase food insecurity.
In 1992, government leaders around the world came together to attend “The Earth Summit” to formulate a sustainable development strategy. It is well known that sustainable development is the way to go about ensuring the health of the people living on Earth and the well-being of the Earth itself. At the World Summit, the Convention on Biological Diversity was born but officially entered December 29, 1993. To commemorate his birthday, World Biodiversity Day was also celebrated in December. But in 2001, the United Nations declared World Biodiversity Day to be May 22. Each year, this day focuses on the theme and is celebrated. Thanks to COVID-19, people are advised to celebrate the event online.
