The club would empower students to learn various subjects through GIS technology
Gurugram, November 27, 2019 – Scottish High International School announced the launch of India’s first ever ‘GIS Club’ in a school. Through this launch, it aims to educate and train the future professionals around the dynamics of GIS technology and how it can be used for better understanding of various subjects including IT, Science, History, Civics, and Literature apart from Geography.
Since 2016, Scottish High International School has been training its students with GIS techniques through Esri India’s K-12 program. The program provides hands on experience for students to learn Esri StoryMaps and use Esri technology in research and learning. In 2017 and 2019, students from Scottish High Schools also won awards in Esri India StoryMaps Contest using Esri’s ArcGIS technology. Students have also presented their work to distinguished audience in the Esri India User Conference.
Speaking on the occasion, Mrs. Sudha Goyal, School Director, Scottish High International School said, “Since the inception, it has been our vision to impart quality education to our students and bring them at par with the global standards. Under the aegis of this vision, we have partnered with Esri India to set up the first ‘GIS Club’ in a school in India. Through this partnership, our students will be able to learn and use the latest geospatial techniques”.
“Esri India has always stood as a strong support, providing us with the facilitators for training our students and free software access. With their support, Scottish High plans to train and create student experts in GIS”, she continued.
Adding to this, Mr. Agendra Kumar, President, Esri India said, “GIS technology has been gaining momentum in the country. Government departments have been using GIS very extensively; we now see more private enterprises realizing the benefits of using GIS. With the demand for GIS skills coming from both private and government sectors, it is imperative to impart geospatial knowledge to the next generation right from the school level. With this in mind, we at Esri India launched the K-12 program to conduct workshops and hands on training on Esri ArcGIS platform and Story Maps at schools.”

He further adds, “We have been very impressed by the work done by students of Scottish High International School in last 3 years. GIS Club is a breakthrough idea that would give students an opportunity to learn all their subjects on maps. We would be happy to support other schools for starting similar initiatives. Through this club, we aim to create future leaders, who can leverage the power of GIS technology irrespective of the field or sector they work in”.
Esri India is helping K-12 segment by providing software, conducting workshops and hands on training on ArcGIS and Story maps. 1,300+ school students have been trained through these workshops. These students are now working on projects and research work leveraging the GIS technology for interactive learning.
