The Chinese proverb “Teach me, and I will forget. Show me, and I might remember. Involve me, and I will never forget” to a very great extent explains that, the theoretical knowledge is enhanced when a co-curricular activity related to the content taught, is organised.
Education definitely is a broad concept that surpasses the four walls of a classroom and helps a child to be aware and well groomed. Also the core motto of education is to foster all round development of a child. All round here refers to essentially being intellectual, physically fit, morally strong, sensible and socially developed. Hence it is needless to say that education plays a fundamental role in the making of a man and his development as a culturally well developed social animal. But there also comes a gap between the child and his development during the summer vacation break and this gap takes forever to be muddied again because gone are the days when kids used to stay at home, do their holiday homework and gain equal amount of knowledge as in school. Technology has made us so addicted to our gadgets that the need to ‘know it all’ creates a hindrance in kid’s participation in outdoor games.
Here comes the use of extracurricular activities, which too are essential for a child’s development. In some schools extracurricular activities are not only the components of academic curriculum but are an integral part of educational environment and a child’s overall aptitude. The word “extracurricular” can be broken down into simpler roots for a literal explanation: “extra” meaning “outside” and “curricular” referring to all of the work you do apart from studying the classroom. So, extracurricular activities are those activities that a child does outside the class.
Activities such as these are highly helpful in the long run. Keeping in mind that colleges are really looking to see activities that have somehow developed talents one can use later in life. Like developed leadership skills allow you to show involvement with your community, and allow you to make an impact on the society.
Schools also love to see that students are active, contributing members of their communities. More importantly, they love to see students who are developing their talents and passions.
In today’s time when kids are happy lazing around or studying and scoring well but doing nothing apart from studies, having a balance between curricular as well as extracurricular is needed. It is an added advantage as, activities that you really care about make you a more motivated, better person. But it is important to know that it is only good to do something when you like it and are passionate about; because this means that you more likely to continue doing it in future and also because these kinds of activities show who you are at your best. Such activities will be the best indicators of how you act when are motivated and dedicated to something.
One such way of utilizing summer vacations constructively is to spend them in a summer camp offered by various schools. They serve dual purpose as it not only gives children a chance to learn something new but can also spend quality time with other children. These camps teach kids to work in groups, build team spirit, create a feeling of brotherhood and also make them self-reliable and independent. Other extracurricular activities that a child could do during his vacations are swimming, sports classes, learning a new form of dance, playing an instrument or even a language class for that matter. No doubt, classroom teaching is utmost important, yet there are a number of advantages of extracurricular activities. They are important for aesthetic development, character enrichment, spiritual and physical growth, extracurricular activities are equally relevant. Different qualities and traits of a child like extempore expression, speech fluency, co-ordination & communication, adjustments with others etc, get empowered and polished while participating in co-curricular activities.
These activities enable students to express themselves freely and groom them for future leadership. At the same time they help to inculcate the values of co-operation. Same learning-teaching routine becomes monotonous and boring; it can be changed into pleasant atmosphere by participating in extra-curricular activities. It helps in the proper channelization of physical health which children today have forgotten and give the least importance to.
And lastly, extra-curricular activities provide motivation for learning. Thus, one can conclude that extracurricular activities play a vital role in shaping the future of children. Hence, parents as well as the children should look forward to these activities without neglecting any pitfalls. Considering all factors are important and essential for development of the children.
Moreover, even studies have proved that extracurricular activities create a lot of positive change in the student’s personality. It reduces the amount of dropouts from school; it also lessens the odds of criminal offenses. It indirectly gives an appropriate mindset that helps in focusing on the betterment of an individual.
If you have the luxury of doing activities during your summer vacations then instead of wasting, make the most of that time. Try to think of innovative ways to pursue your passion that you can’t necessarily do when tied down with school work. But remember Co-Curricular activities are those which are undertaken side by side with the curricular activities and are neither above nor below them. Attaining this balancing curricular and extracurricular will contribute to the overall personality development and growth of your child.
