Sports in Education

Children are the backbone of a nation and a strong education system is an assured path to a better, brighter future for students, and invariably for the entire country. Good education focuses on the development of the over-all personality of a pupil, imbibing qualities of leadership, tolerance, teamwork and sharing. Although mental development, including the power of reasoning and vocational skills comes from academics, attributes such as leadership, team spirit and confidence are derived by engaging in sport activities. Undeniably, academics and sports are the two sides of the same coin.

Academic success is no small feat, but students who participate in sports are proven to reap more benefits than students who don’t engage in any physical activity at school. Engaging in sports activities helps improve students’ focus on school work, as well as help them lead happier, healthier lives. Unfortunately, the present-day system of education lays too much stress on mental development, pays only little importance on moral enrichment and neglect the physical well-being of a student.

Children’s participation in sports is a must, and should be encouraged as part of the school curriculum. The digital era has brought in a major shift in the way children spend their free time. Rather than spending time glued to their smart phones or tabs, it’s time that parents and teachers bring children back to the playground.

A healthy mind resides in a healthy body

At an elementary level, indulging in a sports activity stimulates the mental and physical growth of a child. It is not limited to being physically fit, but has positive effects on academics as well. It is known to increase concentration levels, boost memory and attention.

Physical Strength

A person who regularly plays sports not only develops a healthy body, but also develops better coordination and body strength. It also provides stamina and mental sharpness, making them less susceptible to illness, stress and tiredness, boosting immunity. A mentally sharp and physically active child is more likely to be stress-free and well-rested.

Character Building

Sports, when inculcated from a very young age, helps build discipline and character. Team spirit is one of the most important aspects of education and sports education is an excellent medium for students to learn core values of teamwork and team building. It also infuses positive qualities including patience, punctuality, teamwork and dedication, and helps in building and improving confidence level. Working with different kinds of students and tackling different situations, handling triumphs, failures and losses can help students gain an enriching and valuable experience that will go a long way in their career path.

Time Management

Additionally, sports education inculcates a great lesson in time management, where each millisecond’s difference in a game can be crucial. It promotes the spirit of healthy competition that drives them to give extra effort and also serves as the right platform to channelize a student’s energy.

Sports form one of the important aspects of a student’s development and is an integral part of our education system. From increasing concentration levels and inculcating confidence, team building and a winning spirit; sports help students build a strong character and a well rounded personality.
