Goa Liberation Day is a regional public holiday celebrated in Goa, India. It is celebrated on 19 December and marks Goa’s release from Portuguese rule in 1961.
History
Located on the west coast of India, Goa is the smallest province in India.
By the end of the 15th century, Portuguese explorers, such as Vasco da Gama, had discovered a new sea route to India, making Goa an attractive destination for new trade routes. In 1510, the Portuguese overthrew the ruling Bijapur sultan Yusuf Adil Shah with the help of a local ally, creating permanent residence in Goa. This marked the beginning of Portuguese rule in Goa that would last for more than 450 years.

Goa prospered, becoming the largest city in Asia for a time, with a population of over 40,000. It is known as ‘Eastern Rome‘ and boasted over 300 weeks.
By the middle of the 18th century, Portuguese Goa had expanded to include most of the modern empire. Although they lost some of their possessions in India, the Portuguese colonial authorities stabilized, forming Estado da Índia Portuguesa or the State of Portuguese India, Goa which was the largest territory.

After India gained its independence from the British in 1947, India demanded that the Portuguese colonies on the Indian subcontinent be given to India. In line with the Estado Novo government’s approach to its overseas territories, Portugal has refused to negotiate the sovereignty of its Indian territories. The Portuguese claim that India has no rights in this area because the Republic of India did not exist when Goa came under Portuguese rule.

On December 19, 1961, the Indian Army attacked Operation Vijay. The work took 36 hours and culminated in the dedication of the Portuguese Governor-General Vassalo da Silva and the extermination of Goa, as well as the islands of Dan and Dau in the Indian subcontinent. Goa, along with Dan and Deu, was planned as a union centre held in central India.
On May 30, 1987, the union area was divided, with Goa becoming the 25th Indian state, and Dan and Dau occupying the union territory.

Significance
This day is very important in commemorating the achievements of Goa in recent years, achieving significant milestones in the tourism sector and maintaining its position as the highest paid in all the provinces and territories of India. That’s why they are celebrating this day as Goa Liberation Day
Now, Goa’s release date is marked by a number of events and celebrations in Goa. A flashlight is set on fire at three different locations in the province, eventually gathering all at Azad Maidan. This is where taxes were levied on those who lost their lives during the takeover of Goa. Various cultural programs such as Sugam Sangeet – an Indian music genre that contains poetry in the Kannada language – were also held in honor of the event.
