Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it celebrated?

In 2001, the government decided to accept Choudhary Charan Singh’s contribution to agriculture and the welfare of farmers by celebrating his birthday as Kisan Diwas.

Since then, December 23 has been recognized as National Farmers’ Day. In general, awareness campaigns and campaigns are organized across the country to educate people about the role of farmers and their contribution to the economy.

Who was Choudhry Charan Singh?

Chaudhary Charan Singh, who briefly served as prime minister between 1979 and 1980, is widely regarded as one of the country’s poorest leaders. He was known for his pioneering work in promoting the welfare of farmers and the agricultural sector.

Charan Singh was no stranger to the struggles against the Indian farmer. He was born into a middle-class family of farmers in Uttar Pradesh on December 23, 1902. Influenced by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, he played a key role in the liberation struggle. After that, his political career focused on socialism in rural India.

Charan Singh has twice served as prime minister of India’s largest agricultural state, Uttar Pradesh, where he has played a key role in shaping globalization. He was behind a number of advanced Farmers’ Bills, including the Land Use Bill of 1939 and the Debt Reduction Bill in 1939.

While serving as minister of agriculture in 1952, he led UP in its efforts to end the medal system. In fact, he went on to record his own UP Zamindari and Land Reforms Bill himself.

On December 23, 1978, he founded the Kisan Trust – a non-profit, non-profit organization – with the aim of educating the masses of rural India in the fight against injustice, and to promote unity among them.

Why is it different this year?

This year, the Kisan Diwas is being considered amidst farmers’ protests against the three agricultural reforms of the Institute. Farmers believe the laws will encourage private investment in the agricultural sector. Many also fear that the reduction of the law will end up hurting small and poor farmers by weakening the government’s Minimum Support Price (MSP) system.

Speaking at a press conference last week, farmers’ leader Rakesh Tikait urged people to support farmers by not cooking a one-day lunch at Kisan Diwas. On Monday, farmers saw a day of famine in protest areas in Delhi, including the Singhu border.

Several farmers have also reportedly visited ‘Kisan Ghat’, a memorial to Charan Singh, to honor the event.

Kisan Divas 2020

Kisan Diwas 2020 or National Farmers’ Day 2020 is a day to celebrate the country’s’ annadata ‘. India has always been regarded as an agricultural country. A rich and prosperous country has enabled the Indians to farm. But inequality, population-related issues and government focus on other sectors of the industry make farming less attractive. In the 1960’s, the Green Revolution helped to make farming more attractive, especially for farmers in the northern region.
