While India’s market is already dominated by local services like Gaana (which in August said it passed 75 million users and in February secured $115 million in funding from China’s behemoth Tencent and Times Internet), Saavn, Hungama and others, not to mention well-funded American services like Google Play, Apple Music and Amazon, Spotify has doggedly pursued cornering at least part of the market in the world’s second-most-populous country.
India, with a population of 1.3 billion and more than 400 million smartphone users, is a potentially huge market for the Swedish company.
According to media reports, Tencent-backed Gaana leads the Indian streaming market with over 80 million monthly users. Spotify has 207 million monthly active users globally and 96 million subscribers.
In India, the streaming service also competes with other players including Amazon’s Prime Music, Alphabet’s Google Play Music and Xiaomi-backed Hungama.
In India, Spotify charges a lot lesser than it does in the US, for instance. You start off with a 30-day free trial for the Spotify Premium service, post which you will pay Rs 119 per month for full access to all the music and the premium features in the app. There is also the option of doing a pre-paid sign-up to Premium for specific durations—for instance, Spotify Premium for 1 day, it will cost you Rs 13. A week-long premium subscription is priced at Rs 39, a monthly subscription is priced at Rs 129, its Rs 389 for 3 months, Rs 719 for 6 months and Rs 1189 for an year.
